Update! On a return visit to The Wine Underground on a busy Friday night the service and attitude was very disappointing. If you can indulge me, let me retell the tale…
At 730 meters above sea level, Mt Lofty commands a wonderful view over Adelaide and it’s coast. During day light savings the view at Mt Lofty Summit Restaurant is a magical experience – the sun sinking slowly into the distant sea, orange and red colours light the sky. In autumn and winter however, unless you’re there before six o’clock you’ll sadly miss the show.

In the interests of honesty and sincerity, Rooview has decided that it should post reviews of all restaurants and venues – however critical. We have in the past decided not to publish reviews of disappointing experiences, because of the impact it may have on the restaurant.

The “Le Prestige” Cahors from Château du Cedre is made of 90% malbec and 10% tannat. Dark purple in colour. Nose of liquorice, tobacco, leather and dark cherries - hint of game?
In the mouth the tannins were slightly drying and seemingly able to chew threw them. Acid was balanced and well integrated. Delicate flavours of plum, dark cherries and bitter chocolate.
Complex, muscular and great persistence of flavour. Well structured and balanced.
Ideal with hard cheese (cheddar on toast for a light dinner in my case) - might work well with parmesan polenta? Drink now or over the next year or two.
Great value for around $30 and highly recommended.
The heart of Adelaide’s Chinatown in Gouger Street sits T-Chow. On of three ‘chow’ restaurants (Ky Chow, Ying Chow and T-Chow) and despite the similar names they are unrelated. This area is also home to the wonderful Adelaide Central Market and numerous other eateries offering (obviously) Chinese but also Thai (Star of Siam especially), Vietnamese and the omni-present Italian.

Jacques Reymond Restaurant is unassumingly chic, refined and elegant. The main dining room is softly lit (while providing enough light to read the menu), comfortable and the tables organised to provide a sense of privacy and good outlook. On being shown to the table, Jacques was present at the entrance to the main dining area to greet the diners. This should be a good night – let the feast begin!

A forbidding Chinese opera styled mask looks onto Little Bourke Street – home of Melbourne’s Chinatown. Beyond the mask, is Mask of China, a Chinese restaurant specialising in Chui Chow cuisine.

In the middle of the Adelaide Botanic Gardens alongside a pond full of ducks and the odd turtle, sits the Botanic Garden Restaurant. You could hardly ask for a restaurant in a better position. The gardens are a world away from the noise and bustle of the city nearby. Even if the food weren’t good, Botanic Garden Restaurant would be full of happy diners.

The Sauce is a warm, welcoming and casual restaurant serving ‘modern Australian’ food. It is tucked into a vine-clad group of shops in leafy inner-suburban Dulwich (10 minutes east of the city). Several of the tables are hand-painted with vegetables and spices, while others are covered in linen.
